The fierce Lady Winter, the romantic Spring, the hot-blooded Summer, and the bohemian painter Autumn — the four seasons battle for control over the world. Throughout the year unfolds a charming puppet story of two snowflakes, Anežka and Anežka, who fall to Earth in winter, melt in spring, evaporate in summer, and meet again in heavy autumn clouds, only to return to the ground as snowflakes once more — in an endless, magical cycle.
Another central character in our fairy tale is Karel — a bit of a wanderer, a witty eccentric living on the edge of society, in whose humble dwelling the personified seasons make unexpected appearances. Each season brings its own unique personality and flair.
“A Palm-Sized Fairy Tale” is one of the finest children’s plays by the brilliant writer Iva Peřinová (who would have celebrated her 80th birthday last year). The play has been successfully staged in numerous Czech and international theatres. It was first premiered in 1991 at the Naive Theatre in Liberec, directed by Pavel Polák.
This partly-rhymed tale introduces children to the changing of the seasons and the water cycle in nature, combining gentle humor, imaginative storytelling, and poetic charm.
The production is directed by Petr Borovský, a member of the Alfa Theatre ensemble, who has directed several shows for the company — most recently Do You Want Smetana? (prem. 2024), commemorating the renowned Czech composer. Music will be composed by Michal Vaniš, and the imaginative set and costumes will be designed by Dana Raunerová, a Pilsen-based artist with a long-standing collaboration with Alfa Theatre — most notably on The Devil Take You! (prem. 2012).
We invite you to a fairy tale filled with music, fun, and the little miracles that only Mother Nature — and puppet theatre — can create.
